Rousseau’s proclamation that “Every legitimate government is republican” demonstrates his belief that there is an objective political reality where republicanism is the only correct structure for legitimate government (180). With the current political climate in the United States, I definitely feel as though we need to reevaluate the way in which crucial issues are discussed and what kinds of solutions are proposed. I think with the advancement of technology and social media platforms, such as twitter, promoting a civil discourse of important issues has become even more difficult. After reading the article entitled “The Meaning of Civility” by Guy Burgess and Heidi Burgess, I agree with many of their assessments and suggestions on how to improve this situation. First of all, especially in the US, it seems to me that the moment someone mentions they are a Republican or a Democrat, the other party is immediately hostile and skeptical. Every department is dependent on the other whether directly or indirectly as such it is essential for each and every employee to realize that one cannot survive in isolation.
