Exploring Programming Languages

Popular programming languages of the 1970’s: * B – Was a forerunner to “C” * Created by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson at Bell Labs in 1969. * Designed for recursive, non-numeric, machine independent applications, such as system and language software. * C – A general purpose, imperative computer programming language, supporting structured programming. * Was designed by Dennis Ritchie at Bell Labs in 1972. * Used to re-implement the Unix operating system. * Smalltalk – An object oriented, dynamic typed, reflective programming language. * Designed and created in 1972 at the Learning Research Group by Alan Kay, Dan Ingalls, and Adelle Goldberg.

* Designed by Brad Cox and Tom Love in 1986 * Main programming language used by Apple for the OS X and iOS operating systems. * Perl – Is a family of high-level, general-purpose, interpreted, dynamic programming languages. * Originally developed by Larry Wall in 1987 * Intended as a general-purpose Unix scripting language to make report processing easier. * FL – “Functional Level” is a dynamically typed strict functional programming language with throw and catch semantics. * Created at the IBM Almaden Research Center in 1989, by John Backus, John Williams and Edward Wimmers. * Designed as a successor of Backus’ earlier FP language, providing specific support for what Backus termed functional-level programming.

Popular programming languages of the 1990’s: * Visual Basic – Is a legacy third-generation event-driven programming language and integrated development environment (IDE). * Developed by Microsoft for its COM programming model first released in 1991. * Intended to be relatively easy to learn and use. * Ada 95 – Revision to 1983’s Ada, Ada 95 has improved support for systems, numerical, financial, and object-oriented programming. * Designed by S. Tucker Taft of Intermetrics in 1995. * Designed for the development of very large software systems. * Delphi – An integrated development environment for
