Unit 1 Reflective Essay: Improving My Writing Skills

Improved Essays
This class has taught me many important things about writing. Most importantly it has taught me how to properly use grammar and punctuation. I have also learned how to properly structure an essay. In turn, I believe that I have greatly improved my writing capabilities. I now feel more than prepared for the remaining courses I have ahead of me.

Looking back at my Unit 1 discussion post, I realize that there are some things I could definitely improve on. What stands out the most to me is my first paragraph. Repeatedly, I used the words “I am” to begin three sentences in a row. Thanks to this class, I know that I should have found varying ways to begin each sentence. Also, I have learned that, in APA format, single digit numbers should be spelled out; those with two or more digits should be written in numerals. For example, 5 should be written as five, and forty three should be written as 43.

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

My experiences with writing have been somewhat limited until I signed up for English 101. I have to admit that English was not my favorite subject in school. I never felt like I was any good at writing, and spelling is still not my strong suit. I always felt like I was better at math. My attitude towards writing was my biggest hindrance to my success.…

I begin the process of writing by thinking about the topic. This may include brainstorming and collecting data to expand my knowledge of the subject. When I brainstorm I get a paper and pen to write down any ideas that come to mind. I then develop the jumbled mass of thoughts into a list of more complete ideas or points that I wish to address. After gathering my thoughts, I begin to think about the paper's format.…

Going into this class I felt that I had a fairly good understanding of writing. However, after receiving my first paper back it became quite apparent that the skill with which I had written in high school would not be sufficient at the collegiate level. My writing was wordy and inefficient, my punctuation was riddled with errors, especially with comma placement, and my theses were weak, and with poor attention to audience. By my second paper I had drastically improved the efficiency of my words, and reduced some of the simple errors, but many still remained. My papers were also still dry and related poorly to my audience.…

Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve.
