I’m writing to express my concerns with the subject and tutor of ‘Professional Writing 1’ (JRNL250).
As the Discipline Leader on the aforementioned subject’s outline, you were the only other port of call I had regarding this matter. If this should be tended to by someone else, I apologise and ask for their details, or for this to be forwarded to them.
As for my concerns, since the beginning of the subject, I’ve personally found the standards of this subject’s content questionable at best. The classes and lectures we receive scarcely match the subject outline, and what skills we should be learning as described by the subjects handbook description are currently naught. Coming onto the second assignment’s submission weekend, we have yet …show more content…
By the time Assignment one required submission, we had not covered how to write any of these text types in class beyond determining our intended audience and the voice appropriate to them, alongside being shown some examples of these texts (a further concern regarding this, is when we were supposedly receiving examples of reports, many of the books handed to us were gallery exhibition descriptions; completely unrelated). This is as far as the subject has shown any relevance to it’s handbook description. Blackall personally admitted was a veiled attempt to give the website some grounding as a news platform. This has since changed to an in-class editing exercise. This change is preferable, however when we were to be taught how exactly the editing process works, we were referred to an external ‘online webinar’ at the personal cost of $50 to ‘learn all we need to know about editing.’ I find this completely unprofessional. No editing classes are a prerequisite for this subject, so one would expect detailed tutorage in the editing process if expected to perform an exam on the matter.
The final concern is in regards to the administration content of this subject (the subject outline, and moodle). Both the subject outline and moodle are, for lack of a better phrase, a complete mess. Questionably formatted, as if copied and pasted from numerous sources, poorly worded and full of syntactical errors. This level of questionability even boils down to the mispronunciation of basic business format
