Reasons To Wear Uniforms In Schools

It is Monday morning, and the girl is ecstatic about the brand new clothes the she had bought. She soon realizes she can not wear those clothes until the weekend because of the uniforms the school requires her to wear. Instead, she pulls out her hideous, plaid, knee-high skirt, and her blue button up with her vest topping it off. Not to mention, that she has to wear the whole same outfit for the next four days as well. Schools recently have decided to require the students to wear uniforms everyday to school. However, this situation will no longer exist if schools did not require the students to wear uniforms. Wearing your personal clothes has more benefits than wearing the uniforms. It also shows what interests an individual has, and could help a person make new friends. For example, if one were to walk into school with a football jersey on, people would instantly know that you like football. This will soon lead to conversation about the topic, and the student will find many people with the same interest. In addition, by giving students a choice on what to wear to school, it forces students to accept others style. Giving students a choice on what to wear is important. It also gives them the responsibility to choose appropriate clothes. “Giving kids a choice to express themselves not only acknowledges their individuality but creates the possibility for a relationship of mutual respect” (The American Civil Liberties Union). In many schools, there are lots of different races. From Americans to Asians every school is diverse. When everyone is wearing the same, identical uniforms, it contains the students to express their culture, and backgrounds. Another example, is if a student is required to wear a dress, or outfit for that day, they would not allowed to wear that to school. In school, teachers and faculty stress that all students should be creative and think outside the box. By wearing school uniforms, it is hard to be creative when the school is restricting an individual on what to wear. Instead of buying multiple outfits for each day of the week, you can just buy the uniform. It is a lot cheaper then buying five outfits, and serves the same purpose. On the other hand, you can wear your own clothes outside of school, such as on the weekends. In addition, the student has to return the uniform at the end of the school year, so you only have the uniform for the school year, unlike your own clothes. The uniforms are very expensive. You are at least required to purchase a pair of shoes, multiple pants, and multiple shirts. With all this clothing the prices can really add up. “... so I was surprised to find that the average cost of school uniforms for parents is $249” (School Uniforms don’t Have to Cost so Much). Not to mention, you have to return the clothes back to the school at the end of the year. With your own clothes, you can wear it whenever you want to.
