Some people believe it is a violation of the people’s rights to prohibit them from wearing specific articles of clothing. For example, the majority of court cases about dress code in the United States are being lost “Because a wide range of student expression, including political and religious speech on clothing, is protected by the Constitution.” (Haynes 1). In one instance, a boy wore a shirt for a gun company to school, went to court over the matter, and won due to his right to express himself. Similarly, several students believe dress codes and uniforms are put in place to force students to conform, which prevents them from utilizing their right to express themselves. Being forced to conform takes away students’ creativity. Some people “complain that uniforms take away their individuality, promote conformity,” and make them feel uncomfortable (“School Uniforms”). Most students agreed that they achieve better grades in school when they feel comfortable and therefore should not be forced to wear uniforms. On the contrary, students and teachers in favour of school uniforms said they feel uncomfortable around inappropriately dressed students, which diminishes the learning environment for others. Considering this, I believe the majority of schools should have school uniforms. In fact, North America appears to agree with me, considering that since around 1999, the number of public schools with uniforms when up 5.7% in a little less than a decade (“School Uniforms”). Additionally, school uniforms help kids feel more professional and that helps that achieve higher in academics. The entire purpose of school is for students to learn, and students perform better when wearing uniforms according to Daniels, then schools should have uniforms. Uniforms can save money for families because they will not have to spend as much money on other clothing, and uniforms also allow students of all races, religions, and economic classes to feel equal.
