The basic characteristics of Coliform bacteria are that they are the shape of a rod and that they are Gram-negative. Coliform bacteria are Gram-negative meaning that their cell wall is made up of two layers that include an outer membrane of cell wall and a peptidoglycan layer. In addition to the two layers that it is made up of, it includes Endotoxins located in the outer membrane that can cause damage to host cells which can lead to illness. Moreover, Coliforms are nonsporulating, they perform anaerobic methods by choice, and due the ebullition of lactose sugar, Coliforms are able to produce acids and gas.
