Unified land operation is the Army operating concept which is executed through decisive actions and guided by mission command. The Army’s framework for exercising mission command is operations process (plan, prepare, execute, and assess). Embedded by the philosophy and principles of mission command, the commander, supported by his staff, drives the operation process to execute conceptual planning or detailed planning necessary for him to understand, visualize, describe, direct, lead, and continuously assess the operation. This philosophy is guided by six principles namely building cohesive teams thorough mutual trust, creating shared understanding, providing a clear commander’s intent, exercising disciplined initiative, using mission orders and accepting prudent risk. By understanding the application of this philosophy and principles, I can exercise disciplined initiative by using my requisite knowledge of mission command, experience and tactical expertise to plan ahead prior to next activities and position myself at critical junctions to influence the operation as well as anticipate prudent risks and any unforeseen circumstances that might arise. I can work on a course of action while continuously guiding and empowering my noncommissioned officers (NCOs) to use their own initiatives and discretions to solve unpredictable problems in current complex operational environment. In the operation process, the commander need to understand the operational environment and problems so as to visualize the desired end state. Commanders describe his visualization to his staff and subordinates to facilitate shared understanding. He directs all aspects of operations in the form of mission orders and leads his troop by providing purpose, clear directions, motivation, and demonstrating command presence on the battlefield. With the knowledge and understanding of operation process, I can facilitate by anticipating the next process is or what need to be done prior to the subsequent activities. I can give prior guidance to my NCOs to prepare them in advance. Knowing the capabilities of my NCOs and Soldiers well, I can advise and ensure that the right people are being delegated with relevant tasks to explore his potential and achieve the commander’s desired outcome. In addition, I can provide leadership and expertise to units and Soldiers at critical locations and times during execution phases to resolve any complex undertakings or adversities. For instance, I can assist in the management of high causalities evacuation, or leading a task force to accomplish specific mission. A
