Diabetes is a disease that affects millions within the world. It is a disease that affects the blood glucose levels within the body. Diabetes is can either be Type I or Type II. Both affect the blood glucose levels in different ways and can are the results of different causes. Diabetes can cause numerous health problems over time and is an incredibly difficult disease to live with on a daily basis. It is important to truly understand the disease and how to manage it. There are multiple causes of diabetes. These can either be hereditary or the result of poor lifestyle choices. One particular thing that diabetics need to be aware of is the amount of carbohydrate intake in their diet. Carbohydrates are turned into glucose by the body; this in turn will cause the levels of sugar in the blood to rise (4). This does not mean that people affected with diabetes should not consume any carbohydrates. It is important to learn which carbohydrates have more health benefits and supply the vitamins and nutrients that are necessary for a healthy diet. There are carbohydrates that include fiber, which is also important for a healthy diet (4). Fiber has also been shown to help slow absorption of sugar in the body (4). Those carbohydrates that have no fiber or nutritional value, such as candy, should be avoided due to the increase in blood sugar levels that it will cause. In some cases the risk of developing diabetes is completely out of a person’s hands and is completely up to heredity and other factors. In other cases, poor diets and lifestyle choices can lead to the development of the disease. If affected it is important to monitor blood sugar levels. It is also important to learn how to incorporate a healthy diet, that includes the proper carbohydrates, and to include regular exercise.
