Unhappy Life The poem, "I Go Back to May 1937" by Sharon Olds is about a child looking back at her parents life and telling about the mistakes they are about to make. Mistakes such as getting married and having a baby and they have no idea that is a huge mistake they are about to make. A speaker of any poem is important, the speaker of this poem is an adult child who is telling the story about her parents in college. A superficial reader might assume that the speaker doesn't want to live, but actually the speaker wants to live to tell about her parents mistakes.
