In Germany, prisoners are given much lesser sentences and are treated like actual people. They retain many of their rights (voting,visitation,etc.) and are given good meals and comfortable cells. They rely much heavier on fines and keeping people from jail, with jails being only for people who need to be separated from society. Instead of this, the United States holds 25% of all the world's prisoners in overcrowded, underfunded prisons. America’s prison population rate is at 478 per 100,000, compared to Europe’s 133.5 per 100,000. This difference is outrageous. So instead of the United States teaching prisoners that they are the scum of the earth and are not true humans, Germany tries to help prisoners change their lives for the better.
Many people will refute these claims by saying that they are just prisoners. They deserve everything that is done to them. This is untrue because people are sent to prison to become better people and learn why what they did was wrong. People with possession of marijuana are not sent to prison because they deserve to be tortured, they are sent because what they did was wrong, and they need to learn how to fix it. Also, the things done in prisons are unconstitutional. Torture and taking away certain rights are illegal, but many wardens and prison guards break these laws, making an unsafe environment for the
