Unfair Dress Codes

“Telling girls to ‘cover up’ just as puberty hits teaches them that their bodies are inappropriate, dangerous, violable, subject to constant scrutiny and judgement, including by adults they trust. Nor does it help them understand the culture’s role in wardrobe choices” - Peggy Orenstein. This is relevant because most females in schools are subjected to unfair dress codes, making them more self conscience about their appearance and not allowing them to freely express themselves. In schools dress codes are biased toward teenage girls. More females are sent out of class in a month than the number of boys in a year. Boys are not held to the same dress code as females. Dress codes promote rape culture and sexism towards women, teaching boys that women need to cover up their body because a male’s education is more important than a females.

Instead of shaming girls for their bodies, we need to teach boys that girls are not sexual objects and that they are equal to them. Teaching males that a female needs to cover up is in fact promoting rape culture, consequently leading males to believe that because of what a female was wearing she was ‘asking for it’.
As pointed out, most schools are very biased against women when it comes to the dress code. Dress codes in the school system are still promoting rape culture and sexism toward females. When a female gets sent out of class because too much of her skin is showing, it is showing that her education is not as important as the males. Males are not held to the same dress code as females, and consequently more females sent out in one month than males are in a year.
