I have spent the last 2 months working, as part of an Americorp program, in a school in lower Manhattan that primarily serves lower income children of color. From this experience I am learning the importance of equal educational opportunity for all. Almost 50% of the students in the middle school, grades 6-8, are reading over one year below grade level.
