I need to do my part to close the opportunity gap. The gap that results in more students of color, students from poor neighborhoods and students with disabilities, not having equal access to quality education. The gap that makes these students more likely to end up in jail or on the streets than their peers of socioeconomic standing.
I have spent the last 2 months working, as part of an Americorp program, in a school in lower Manhattan that primarily serves lower income children of color. From this experience I am learning the importance of equal educational opportunity for all. Almost 50% of the students in the middle school, grades 6-8, are reading over one year below grade level. This is a direct result of the unequal access to education
