According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the unemployment rate in the month of September was 5.9%. There are certain types of categories that people may fall into that may be considered as unemployed. Unemployment is shared equally by all kinds of people. It does not matter age, race, or even where you may live. As long as you are a person, there is a chance that you may be unemployed at some point in your life. The costs of unemployment to the individual are probably terrible to imagine, because you never would want a person to have to go through a struggle and hardships of losing a job. Unemployment does not just affect that one individual, but if they have a family it effects them too. Some people may suffer dreadfully due to unemployment. Also, prolonged unemployment has a negative effect on a person 's sense of self-worth, which is, damage that might remain in place even after the person is once again employed. The longer a person may be unemployed it could possibly weigh them down and they could stay in that “unemployed rut”. Unemployment affects not just the person but also his or her family and in the long run the society where he lives. The social costs of unemployment are difficult to calculate. How people interact with one another I a major social cost. Unemployment may bring a decrease in social outings and interactions with other people, including friends. With a high rise in unemployment, it could cause more crimes and violent behaviors because people are having to turn to that to meet there economic needs. I am not stating that it is okay for people to use being unemployed to be there excuse for committing dangerous crimes in order to get what they feel the need or demand. Also, society could start looking at the unemployed in a different way, such as a hurt on the economy which would not be a good thing.
