This letter is being written to you, to let you know my thoughts about how much this class has enabled me to grow as a writer and student. As a writer I have many new acquired strengths. One of these newly acquired strengths is that I have the ability to write an essay that assess other author’s pieces of work. Before this class, I wrote very generic five paragraph essays that let the reader know, that the author of a certain piece of work was a good writer and captivated the audience. Now I am able to state the authors’ purpose and the rhetoric terms that he or she uses to get their purpose across to their audiences.…

Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…

Reading is such a focal part of my life that I sometimes lose sight of the fact that many people can't do it. Aside from the more practical and obvious benefits of a more literate society, those who can read and write suddenly have a way to change their lives and their world. Literacy is a prerequisite to an education, and receiving an education is a way for those living in poverty to change their…

I must admit I was intimidated by the readings for this week. However, once I started, I realized the readings complement the information in Literate Lives from my Literacy Foundations course, which makes it simpler to understand. Let’s look at some of the paraphrased facts from that course that correlates with this week (Flint, 2008) . Then, I will build upon that information to dive deeper into the issue of disproportionality.  The background, culture, and experiences teachers have differ from their students.…

My Struggles of Literacy and How I Work to Fix Them Literacy, in my eyes, is the way of sharing ideas, facts, and emotion. Emotional literacy such as poetry has had a big role in what I read today. They can express things in simplicity and make it so vivid at the same time. Any book can have the ability to change a perspective on a certain topic or helps me acknowledge the things around me. Enjoying to read has never been the issue, but pronouncing certain words that I’m reading has.…

For research project, I decided to research what the neuropsychological effect of Unilateral Spatial Inattention (USI) has on a person. All of the other ideas for topics I’d thought of were too difficult to do so I decided to ask my teacher and optometrists for help in discovering a topic. I really wanted to do a topic on ‘visual neglect’ because it was among those that was related to psychology, which I am highly interested in. After talking to an optometrist online, I was convinced that the proper term for this particular eye syndrome was ‘USI’. USI is described as a behavioural syndrome in which a patient cannot interpret the left side of objects/ people due to damage to the brain.…

Reading and writing is everywhere in this world and as teachers we must push our students to understand literacy no matter what content we are teaching. Literacy is included in all subjects, it might not be the main source of a certain subject but it is important in every subject. Other teachers might not understand that literacy is needed for every course that they teach. In the article Literacy and Language as Learning in Content-Area Classes: A Departure From "Every Teacher a Teacher of Reading" Douglas Fisher and Gay Ivey explains why literacy is important in every subject. Literacy has now been a national focus and is receiving the attention that is requiring for students to become successful.…

Considering I have been a university student on and off for the last decade, I believe I have become complacent about my academic literacy skills. I earn good grades, in my opinion, and I often receive positive feedback on my academic writing style and my referencing. Whilst I have received some criticisms, it has never occurred to me to analyse my academic literacy skills and make a point of identifying my weaknesses and improving upon them. As my degree progresses, I increasingly need to be able to express myself confidently and clearly and I cannot do that sufficiently until I have refined my writing skills (Grellier & Goerke, 2014, p. 159). Using online proofreading tools was a useful way for me to identify the deficits in my writing style…

When starting Writing 101 around 8 weeks ago, I came in with very little knowledge. The knowledge I did come in with was mainly from high school and Military administrative school. In high school you learn the basics of writing whereas in the Military administrative school you learn a different type of format altogether. I graduated high school in 2011 so I never really had to use APA or even basic writing format after my senior paper.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
