Although there is an increase in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) population, these patients are still amongst the largest group of undeserved patients within the healthcare setting. The group is constantly exposed to homophobia, heterosexism, inadequate and or denial of healthcare (Gridley & Kothary, 2016). This heterosexism increases their risk for substance abuse, psychological distress, and negatively impacts their quality of life (Alzate-Urrea, et al., 2016). There is a need to understand the insensitivities and inadequacies of healthcare providers as it pertains to LGBT healthcare. A review of literature was conducted utilizing the Pubmed and CINHAL database, to determine if the lack of knowledgeable and competency among healthcare providers predispose LGBT patients to discriminative healthcare services. There have been numerous discussions about LBGT healthcare; however, there were less than 100 articles found on how gaps in nursing knowledge predispose LBGT patients to discriminative healthcare services. The purpose of this literature review is to examine how gaps in nursing knowledge predispose LGBT patients to discriminative healthcare services. The body of the review is organized into three main parts. The first part comprises the theoretical literature review, the second part entails the empirical literature review, and the last part consists of the literature review summary.
