Understanding Service Project Analysis

The Understanding Service project, though difficult to schedule and complete, was extremely formative in my understanding of living a true Christian lifestyle. In my interviews with Abbot Brian, my aunt Vera Fernandes, and my best friend Ranvir Bhatia, I learned key information about how to seamlessly integrate service into my own life. Even though people like my friend Ranvir are not Catholic, there is still a place for service in everyone’s life and I learned a lot of things from his Hindu perspective on service that I can incorporate to be an even better Catholic. Ultimately, the experience was truly special and I know is something I will carry on for the rest of my life.
For my first interview, I, along with half of the class, interviewed

I already knew a lot about him since we have been very close since we were little kids and have grown up together. I did, however, learn a lot from my interview with him. It was the most relaxed interview since we already know each other so well, and so it was easy to get very thorough answers from him. He, like me, has always been interested in the biological sciences and so he decided that traveling to a foreign country would be beneficial to understanding different cultures while also helping out those with less knowledge about medical procedures within the household. I was extremely interested to hear about his experience in the Dominican Republic, which varied greatly from my stay in the country. While I had enjoyed the comforts of a 5 Star Hotel, Ranvir had to endure the hardships of living in the village and with people that he did not fluently speak the language with, although he did take Spanish in high school. His most rewarding memory, which was quite compelling for me, was the first day he taught English at a local high school. Ranvir is a very tall and built kid, and so the girls in the senior class were making fun of this boy in the class who looked like a stick compared to Ranvir. He, however, realized that he should not bask in the glory and instead …show more content…
All three of my interviewers had to sacrifice something in order to complete their vocations. Aunty Vera and Abbot Brian had to give up the ability to raise a family, while Ranvir had to give up part of his summer, which he could have used to recover from the arduous school year. Even though all three had to sacrifice personal pleasures, they all ultimately believed that they had been called to do something great with their lives through their respective service and subsequently by doing so they have become the best person they could possibly be. I know that inevitably, when God calls me for my vocation, I will use the important lessons I learned from Abbot Brian, Aunty Vera, and Ranvir, and make sure that I approach my lifelong service to others with enthusiasm and endure the personal sacrifices to live out a true Christian

I tend to think of this point as the most important point. Standing and serving those in need doesn't have to just be the poor, it could be a friend who was being bullied, or someone who simply needed help with homework. As Catholics, we stand by people who need assistance rather than running away and ignoring them. This summer, I worked at the Center for Food Action, which is a food bank in north Jersey. Helping out and delivering the canned good and donations to the needy was such an amazing experience.…

Sacrifice When we sacrifice something, we are really just passing it along to others. I had a chance to go to the National Scout Jamboree in West virginia. It was filled with adventure and excitement but there was one day i dreaded. There was a day of service that was required by all troops. It was the 7th day there and we woke up at 5:45 in the morning to eat and make our bus to go to the site and begin our community service.…

Many days I wondered how I could expand my knowledge of other cultures. Then, my junior year of high school, the opportunity to attend a mission trip through my parish came about. Catholic Heart Workcamp, often referred to as CHWC, was the name of the program.…

As I was sitting in class one day, my professor prepared to ask us a question. I centered all my theological knowledge into one area of my brain, and was ready to analyze whatever came through. I was unaware of just how much this trip was about to affect me and my way of thinking. We were just a group of college kids, ready and willing, but little did we know what experience lay ahead. By being willing to do whatever was necessary to make a difference, we were able to affect the lives of many people by sharing the love of Christ in a practical way. We pulled up to the church on a Monday afternoon and quickly piled out of the vans. We were all ready to get settled in, but that was not the plan Carrie, the outreach coordinator for Restored, had.…
