Understanding of multiplication facts is essential to have down by fourth grade. Knowing the times tables and being able to fluently recall immediately is needed throughout the entire year because of PA Mathematics Standards beginning with multiplication of multidigit numbers. There were students in my fourth grade classroom that had yet to be fluent with their multiplication facts, and it was necessary for them to have it down, for everyday mathematics and for the PSSA’s. I discussed with my mentor teacher which students would benefit most from remediation and reviewing the multiplication facts again. I selected five students based on their standings of Rocket Math, a one minute assessment to see how many multiplication facts they can solve given a set, normally limited to certain numbers, and gets more challenging as they move up. I was able to utilize some down time after lunch to work with the five students I selected which would then lead them into the part of the day where they have mathematics.
