Understanding My Culture Of Identity

Improved Essays
Understanding my culture of origin is extremely difficult due to the fact that it is very mixed. A quarter of my family has been in America since William Penn came over. They were English, Scottish, as well as Irish and later Cherokee. Another half of my family came through Ellis Island and were of Polish, Italian, Czechoslovakian, and Lithuanian descent. The last quarter of my family is of unknown origin due to the adoption of my paternal grandfather.
My family is commonly referred to as a Heinz 57 makeup. However, there are some similarities within the values and beliefs of the family. Every side of my family values togetherness and hold the belief that family is everything. They value and honor their religious beliefs as well as their elders.

Place with a Memory Just like everyone in the United States of America, excluding Native Americans, I’m an immigrant and/or come from immigrant descendants. This means everyone has a race or ethnic group from which they descend from, and they may or may not follow the cultural aspects of their kin. Being a first-generation immigrant, I grew up with all of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents directly on the opposite side of the world from me, so to me my real family was only between me, my mom, my dad, and…

My heritage is one of mixed roots as many American families now are. The family gene pool is pulled from a variety of different ethnicities including Choctaw Indian, Irish and German. When America was formed the Irish were viewed as lower class and poor and this limited the work they were permitted to perform. My great, great, grandfather, who was Irish and German, married a Choctaw Indian lady when he was only 22 years old and has been in the country for only a short amount of time. The marriage permitted him to build his home on the Indian reservation in Tulsa, Oklahoma.…
