Skill 3 Intercultural Skills
• Describe (what you see or perceive)
“They walk into my house with their shoes on”.
Rather than “Now they get my house messy”.
• Own (your perspective and feeling)
“I feel uncomfortable because they enter my house without taking off their shoes and I have to clean the floor again” instead of
“I’m mad and shocked at their behavior”.
• Encourage (future communication)
“I think that majority of countries have a culture that it is normal to enter into someone’s house with their shoes on. So in advance I will tell them our culture that we take off our shoes at the entrance to avoid getting the floor dirt”.
Skill 4 Converting “YOU” statements to “I statements”
1. “When I ask for a discussion, you just all sit there”

2. How come you never share the agenda?”
b. I feel overwhelmed by all these options when I have to consider a question in all its aspect because this problem is not only between you and me but also some other people are involved in so we need to work things out together.

Skill 8 Understanding Communication Climates
1. Sue, turn off! Nobody can study with all that noise. (Control, and Certainly)
a. Problem-solving: I am studying now. Can you turn down the volume?
Provisionalism: I cannot study with a loud sound. I will move to quiet place so she can enjoy her music and I can focus on my study.
2. Terry, you’re acting like a child. Hint: You will have to use descriptive language to explain what Terry is doing. (Evaluation)
b. I feel annoyed when you leave food you dislike on the plate because I am sad.
3. Whatever you decide will be okay with me. Let’s just move on. (Neutrality)
c. I know there are some good options and not easy to pick one but I think you have a good taste. If you don’t mind can you pick one for me?
4. Make up your own: “You are always late’ (Evaluation)
d. I feel frustrated because I have a limited amount of time to meet you. If you come on time we can spend more

I take my shoes off when I enter a house and bow to my elders as a greeting, do you? These are things that may seem weird to you, but are normal to someone else. A person’s culture has a very strong impact on how they may see people, places, traditions, and more. One of the ways culture impacts someone’s life is through their appearance. For example, in Multiculturalism Explained in One Word: HAPA, a woman named Kristen Lee who is “a quarter Chinese and the rest is Swedish” (page 51).…

I headed into the courtroom of Judge Thomas Marcelain to observe my first courtroom trial. The trial involved a 31-year-old man named, Daniel Bohanna, of Pataskala. Mr. Bohanna decided to represent himself in his trial for fear of misrepresentation. He was charged with rape, kidnapping, and felonious assault. I have seen footage on T.V. from famous trials and of course seen reenactments from Hollywood, but I have never been to one in person until now.…

Derek Sivers demonstrated in his video, "Weird or just different?" that every society has its own unique way of doing things, which is termed as a people's culture. The demonstration about streets in the U.S.A. and blocks in Japan shows that what one community thinks is obvious in their setting is totally strange in another community/society. Sivers stresses the importance of traveling away from one's country to learn and understand other people's culture to avoid contradictions especially when it comes to business communications (Sivers). Different countries have different ways of doing things. For example, Americans do not bother much about looking smart or dressing well as long as a person has what it takes to deliver the point home.…

It is clear that in this article the author, Blommaert, understands that culture, and intercultural communication, is no longer just about culture and communication between different religions, and/or races. It is now about the communication and culture between different genders, ages, social classes, professions, workplace, religion, consumption, hobby, media, etc. Blommaert understands that individuals now need to be able to read different social situations and adapt to fit in, or else be deemed “socially awkward”. The author also understands that knowing the…

The first few weeks of the semester really made me realize how terrible of a communicator, I am; in a communication class perspective. Throughout my week, I would write in my Interpersonal Communication Journal about all of the different types of conversations I came across. Not one conversation was the same. They were all about different topics. Each journal entry I would write, however, had all different aspects to them.…

Interpersonal communication is the process of sending and receiving information between two or more people. It is a person-to-person contact, it includes everyday exchange that may be formal or informal and can take place anywhere by means of words, sounds, facial expression, gestures and postures. Two significant learning points for me during this course was in module 3, using the I-language instead of you-language which gives power over our thoughts, feelings and emotions to others. To take responsibility for your own feelings, rely on I language rather than you language. I language owns thoughts and feelings and does not blame them on others (Wood 125).…

This perspective is one I wholeheartedly agree with. Having been in a hiring position previously, I can relate to wanting to hire an individual with the right mindset over someone with the right skill set. The education system is largely designed around teaching skills.…
