Its hard to understand why people do the things they do. The people that betrayed their friends did the things they did to please others. They also did it because the had to protect their ‘image’ or their pride. These people will also listen to anyone that has a bigger voice, more money, authority, or someone with a badge. They stop caring about what is morally correct. Then there are still the people that do the right thing and their motivation for doing the right thing is that they would someone to do the same thing for them.
