When an adult comes into contact with children in their daily line of work, that adult “has a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children”. Safeguarding means to protect and promote what is best for the welfare of the child and ensuring that there are sufficient measures in place to prevent the child coming into contact with abuse or an abusive situation. Child protection is protecting a child where there is reasonable belief that the child may have suffered or may be at high risk of suffering as a result of abuse.

The vetting and Barring Scheme was introduced in October 2009. It meant that anyone working with children and young people has to be registered with the ISA (Independent Safeguarding Authority). They will make the decision if somebody is safe to work with children, taking their information from sources such as the Criminal Records Bureau
