There are different types of communication including verbal, body language, informal, formal and written. Formal communication is passing messages between or to people either verbally, face to face or on the phone or physically, email or letter. This involves formal language which avoids using slang terminology. Formal conversations mostly start with a greeting such as ‘Good afternoon or good morning’. It is mostly used to show respect to others who are not friends or close relatives. It is often used by a professional e.g. a health carer would use formal language to communicate with their patient. It avoids misunderstanding as it is clear and correct also it is mostly used for conversations which could be serious or health related when there is nothing to joke about. It is important to understand different types of communications because some people just don’t prefer communicating with a professional in an informal way because they might find it a bit weird or too friendly. Also, people find it easier to communicate formally to doctors or health carers because they need to show respect to them and speak clearly so the doctor or health carer knows and understands what they are trying to say. Emotions can be shown by the look of the face by movement of muscles on the face. Facial expressions are key to a good conversation because for example, if a patient talks to their health carer about something worrying and serious and the health carer starts smiling the patient might find it a bit rude and unacceptable. This means it is important to match the correct facial expression to the context of the conversation for the communication to work properly and effectively.
