Understanding Christian Faith from the Biblical Perspective The definition of faith is defined in the Bible as “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (BibleGateway, Hebrews 11:1). In other words, faith believes that something will take place or manifest before it actually does. Faith is not based on whether God believes it or not but if the believer does. Faith is a process. Each believer’s faith level is different. “For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, the just shall live by faith” (BibleGateway, Romans 1:17). Too many Christians are having faith failures. This is when a believer prematurely gives up or loses faith for the promises that God has made because it is taking too long for the promise to come to fruition. In Hebrews chapter 11, there is a list of those who demonstrated great faith in the face of adversity. Some may wonder how Abraham called “The Father of Faith” and a prostitute named Rahab could be on this list together. Perhaps it is because it is not necessary to have a title or be a pillar of a community to have faith. Everyone has been given a measure of faith and it is just a matter of executing it. The word says this about those who were on this faith list; “Not one of these people, even though their lives of faith were exemplary, got their hands on what was promised. God had a better plan for us: that their faith and our faith would come together to make one completed whole, their lives of faith not complete apart from ours” (BibleGateway, Hebrews 11:39-40). “So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you” (BibleGateway, Matthew 17:20). The analogy of the mustard seed shows just how much faith one is required to have. The mustard seed is microscopic and is as small as a grain of sand.
