Underserved Community

An underserved community is a community that is provided with inadequate service of basic amenities, but especially in the fields of social and health services. Vulnerable populations are more likely to be a part of the underserved communities. Individuals who live in rural areas and come upon obstacles in receiving healthcare assistance, ethnic and cultural minorities, people with chronic illnesses, the mentally retarded, the uninsured, the elderly, the economically destitute, and the homeless, are all included as a possible definition of a vulnerable population. This vulnerability is heightened by each individual’s race, age, gender, and culture. The underserved merit the right to quality healthcare and preemptive amenities that are readily available, socially suitable, and will support and safeguard their health. I am fortunate to have been born and raised in an orthodox Jewish community. In our community there are multitudes of organizations in place with the sole purpose of helping underserved individuals. When I matured, I heard about the wonderful organization known as Chai Lifeline. The mantra of this organization is “Fighting illness with love.” Chai Lifeline's programs offer emotional, social, psychological, and financial assistance to families living with pediatric illness or loss. They find ways to bring joy to the lives of young patients and their families through creative, innovative, and effective family-centered programs, activities, and services. They provide unparalleled support throughout the child’s illness, recovery, and beyond, to not only the child itself, but to the parents and siblings as well. They offer all services free of charge to ensure that every family has access to the programs it
