Underrepresented Person: A Personal Statement

I have always had a love for the sciences and a passion for helping others. Throughout my grade school journey, I took advantage of learning about the body by taking health oriented courses that broadened my knowledge of medicine that would prepare me for higher education. Dentistry became my career interest during my middle years of school. Beginning in the sixth grade, I was introduced to one of the most essential processes of the systematic era, the scientific method. I was taught that the scientific method is the approach that scientists of any sort take in order to confirm or deny a specified hypothesis. I apply these teachings to my interest to conduct research. Conducting research can help me understand the foundation of an experimental process, as well as the methods executed in order to accept or deny a potential theory. Being a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry, a great amount of research is needed in order to gain clarity on the curriculum that is being taught. I take pleasure in learning new things because I can then challenge myself; I can force myself to think outside of the box and beyond my comfort zone, which makes me more marketable as a future employee in health care. I feel that participating in the STEP-UP program will give me an opportunity to continue learning in addition to expanding my knowledge of the biological sciences.
