Underlying Cause of World War One Happy songs whistled by soldiers on their way to war, knowing they will be home by Christmas. The whistling stopped after two years of war; additionally, knowing their families were struggling at home, with death and famine. World War I, or the Great War, occurred from July 28, 1914 to November 11, 1918. Multiple wars started that contained fighters from many countries, including France, Italy Britain, Germany, United States of America, Austria-Hungary and Russia. With seven countries involved, the casualty count ended racking up to about 20 million people. Casualties occurred with all the new killing machines that they created before or during the war, tanks, airplanes, submarines, gas, trenches, machine guns, and advanced ships. Bloody wars occurred in France, Italy, the sea, the skies, Russia, etc. The three underlying causes that sparked the long lasting war were imperialism, militarism, and alliances. To begin, before thoughts of a war were even considered, imperialism caused tension throughout Europe. Imperialism is a practice of extending the power, control, or rule by one country over areas outside its borders. Britain had obtained the most colonies by imperialism, which pressured other countries to obtain the same amount of land. According to …show more content…
In observing the underlying cause of World War One, there is no right or wrong opinion because they all had a significant effect on the reason behind the war. Countries that involved themselves in militarism and imperialism were racing to become the top country in Europe. Fears that war will be declared on their country while they have little power of militarism and imperialism resulted in allies between the countries.
