Both unemployment and underemployment are two major issues facing the US economy. Underemployment alludes to the workers that are highly qualified and talented, but work in low skill jobs, or workers that would like to work full time, but only work part time. According to the Washington Post, 1 in 13 minimum wage workers have a college degree. College graduates that work in occupations in the fast-food industry, or in any other minimum wage sales jobs that aren't working at their full capability, and aren't applying their qualifications, knowledge and skills to the job market. Unemployment does only affect income, but also the physical and mental health of the unemployed workers. Studies have shown that life expectancy is reduced for workers who have lost their jobs or have been laid off. In addition, children also suffer permanent damage when parents lose jobs. A study found that sons of men who lost their jobs eventually earned about 9 percent less than sons of otherwise comparable, working parents. Unemployment also has devastating effects on families as a whole. A few years ago, my father got laid off from his job, and was unemployed for about 2 years. He became very poor and depressed and felt worthless. At that moment of my life it was only my dad because my parents were divorced. Living with my dad became so bad to the point where we didn’t have any food in the house and we had to eat at fast food restaurants. I lived with him for a few months and then I later left to live with my mom because it was a better environment to surround myself in. My father got a new job and is now remarried. Although now everything is good, my father still has a fear of losing his current job he works at. Underemployment can also have negative effects on quality life, and family life. For example, parents working minimum wage despite having bachelor's degrees are going to struggle financially, and as a result be very stressed out. This can translate into worse upbringing of the children, and worse
