I chose an Undercover Boss clip, Let Me Help You Get Started, starring Darius Rucker, a successful performer and an upcoming singer named Jocelyn. Mr. Rucker shows a high-level of emotional intelligence in this clip using “I” language, person-centeredness, mindfulness, and self-disclosure. Using these techniques, allowed him to recognize Jocelyn’s feelings and how to react to her to put her at ease.

In the clip, Mr. Rucker informs Jocelyn that he has chosen to help her get a record deal with Universal Music Group and go with her to meet with the company’s president. He also gives her ten thousand dollars to help finance her career. Mr. Rucker uses “I” language such as “the time I spent with you was unbelievable” and other “I” sentences

David Wallace Foster’s Kenyon College Commencement Speech is extremely successful for a multitude of reasons. It is not so much inspirational or revolutionary or epic, just simply honest. His speech is blunt about what people will face in their life after education. That adult life is boring, repetitive, trivial, tiring. Yet despite being adult life being unsatisfactory, Wallace always says it will only be those things because of your perspective.…

Chris’s use of rhetoric to perfectly captivate his audience highly influenced me. Before starting to take the idea of self-driving car into reality, all he and his coworkers had was plan in their heads and thoughts to accomplish it. This thought ensured that it didn’t take too long for them to build the prototype version of the self-driving cars. So, this inspires me to think that nothing in this world is impossible. I know that, there are numerous mysteries for us to discover, and to discover them, all of us have to dig in deep.…

In “A visit from the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan the main character, Sasha, at first, comes off as a selfish thief, but the items she steals make us look past her self-centered attitude. Sasha is a very troubled person who has a compulsive stealing problem. Coz, her therapist, believes that her problem has something to do with her father leaving her at age six. Sasha, obviously, has gone through a very tough childhood and by the fact that no one, not even her therapist (6), knows her real age proves that Sasha has not emotionally attached to many people. Sasha’s stealing problem isn’t like most because she doesn’t steal money or credit cards from people, she steals the personal items.…

The dealers at the highest levels are also facing decades in prison or life. Therefore, they have incentives to exaggerate the stature of their underlings. Furthermore, they will in many cases lie to implicate completely innocent people in order to produce more convictions for the prosecutors. As a result, it creates a chain reaction with more informants implicating other innocent people. There is no community that has been affected more by the informant system than the black community.…

The video I chose was based on etiquette in the deaf culture. The video, Deaf Culture Etiquette, taught me a variety of differences between etiquette in the hearing community and the deaf community. One of the most important differences between the two communities I learned after watching the video, Deaf Culture Etiquette, was how people in the deaf community get each other’s attention. Rather than relying on sound and the ability for others to hear them, a deaf person trying to get someone’s attention would tap them, wave at them, or stomp. Furthermore, another important difference between the hear community and the deaf community is how they both interact with new people.…

DreamWorks' newest feature The Boss Baby, based on the children's book by Marla Frazee, explores these concepts for all of twenty minutes, then fills the remaining run time with the usual tasteless humor and adult references expected by the studio made famous by Shrek. While the supporting cast gives somewhat decent voice performances, nothing else of memorable interest defines their character. The whole focus lands on the one big star on the poster. After recent critical praise on SNL, Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, The Cooler) now makes his second portrayal of our current blonde, small- handed president in a form for the kiddos. He tells his whole story to us, where he came from, how he got here, and why.…

Looking Forward Rather than Behind “I heard what he had gone through, and would continue to go through until he came to rest in earth.” (Baldwin 121) A Visit From the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin both work as literary reminders that living in the past is not emotionally healthy, and that pain from the past permeates into present day life. The texts beg the question: Can the past ever be fully forgotten or overcome?…

In this magazine article by Green we see Robbins performing his “magical” trick of pickpocketing by taking advantage of peoples’ change blindness. Green in his article says: “Robbins needs to get close to his victims without setting off alarms bells” which reminds me of the examples of the boat, the advertisement, and the cards trick, where the change was happening so slowly that it was unnoticeable. The same way Robbins is slowly getting close to his victims, and thus allowing him to have easy access to their pockets. Green asked Robbins if he is scared that he is giving too much to people through his YouTube videos, he said that it doesn’t matter whether or not they are aware of it.…
