Seventy three percent of teens in the United States have consumed alcohol. About 12% of alcohol consumption comes from underage drinkers. At the age of 18, a person is considered a legal adult so why deny them the right to drink?
Alcohol consumption increases with age but teens are going to drink whether it is legal or not. Lowering the drinking age would minimize illegal underage drinking. Underage drinkers usually binge drink which is unhealthier than casual drinking. Binge drinking occurs since teens are not allowed to drink, therefore they drink more alcohol in a shorter period of time while they have that opportunity.
Also if the drinking age was lowered and teens did not have to worry about being caught, they could drink in safer environments.
