Under the Wave off Kanagawa, also known as “The Great Wave”, is one of the most famous pieces of art in the world; and questionably the most well-known work of Japanese art. The print displays the inspiration of Dutch art, and demonstrated to be inspiring for many artists working in Europe around the nineteenth century. It is part of a sequence of prints called “Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji”, which Hokusai created between 1830 and 1833. It is a multicolored woodblock print, prepared with ink and color on paper that was roughly 10 x 14 inches. “Ukiyo-e” is the term for Japanese woodblock prints created during the Edo Period.
