There are only three members of the football team who get mentioned O. C. Brown, Chavis Daniels, and Montrail 'Money' Brown. The one player who stands out the most that truly understands the Coach's vision is the team's best player, O.C. Brown. He struggles academically and is having trouble getting into college due to his low ACT score. Montrail is an under-sized player for his position but plays with heart and the intensity that makes him one of the stronger members of the team. Chavis rejoined the team after serving 15 months in a juvenile detention. He has talent on the field but it is tainted by his aggressive behavior off the field. With these issues, the school and community began to have pride and believed that they could conquer any obstacle. The coach is at top of the organization chart with next level representing his volunteer assistant coaches. O.C. Brown and Montrail are team captains. Team was designed with a reward and consequences system. This was implemented to reward and recognize good behaviors with the “Common Man” award. Coach Courtney also enforced the consequences for negative behaviors such as poor grades and conduct with suspensions.
At first, team culture was riddled with low self-esteem and had become known as doormat to other teams. This culture was changed when Coach Courtney started to hold the students accountable for their actions and meet need with options to help improve the student’s deficiencies. The team was supported by a local church where they held pre-game meetings and prayer sessions.
Coach Courtney and his assistant coaching staff improved the performance of the team by strengthening the cohesiveness of the team. The team members no longer were self-centered and fighting amongst themselves. They were focused on executing plays to defeat their opponents and not themselves. When they began to operate as a supportive unit, they began to win. The execution of the plan was achieved as the Coach had each player to focus on their individual strengths.
