Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). In “Why Do We Make So Much of Gender,” Allan G. Johnson argues against patriarchal beliefs as well as gender profiling. He begins by proving that religion and history play a key role in how cultural expectations develop. Johnson follows by giving examples that support the fact that gender profiling still exists to this day and proves that the mistreatment of women is more than a biological issue, but social as well. Johnson, with samples from other authors, proves the irony between how men and women are supposed to be portrayed. Although both genders are the target audience, this video is more directed to the female audience because they constantly repeat the phrase “like a girl”. The commercial includes several races in this video and I think it does it to prove that this problem or perception of “like a girl” is not limited to only a certain type of people or race. Also, as mentioned before, the contribution of both males and females in this video that not only kills the stereotype, but also promotes women confidence clearly demonstrates that this perception of “female strength” is not limited to only one gender. To successfully make a difference, the solution must be targeted towards children, and should be handled through different angles.
