Friendships are symbiotic relationships, where people share their talents and qualities to help each other through life. The novel, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, exhibits many forms of these two-way relationships, the strongest, between the characters George and Lennie, and the other friendships between Crooks and Lennie, and George and Slim. These relationships show how each pair benefit from each other’s companionship, and help each other in the harder times of life, the most important one, being the friendship of George and Lennie. The first and strongest two-way relationship shown in the novel was between Lennie and George, who share each other’s talents and abilities to fulfil each other’s needs. George helps Lennie out in all situations,…

In the 1930s during the Great Depression, most men worked on a farm in the hot sunlight all day to provide for themselves or for their family. Because of this, men worked solely to earn money, and did not want anything to do with the other working men on the farms. Consequently, it is very unlikely for two men to be traveling and working together. However, the opposite is true in Of Mice and Men. In the novel two characters are very close, when at the end one makes the decision to murder the other, for various reasons.…

Their need for friendship and longing allow for them to get close to others, and that encourage their actions. For a stranger, a person may not move their seat, or take that bullet. George and Lennie, The two main characters of John Steinbeck 's novella Of Mice and Men, are seen as friends because of the companionship they provide each other throughout the story. Despite one of the overall themes of friendship in Steinbeck 's work, I hold the theme of loneliness to a higher regard when I consider the events between the two characters. I am willing to argue that George did not genuinely act as good friend to Lennie. In addition to the cruel ways George treated Lennie, the situations presented in the novella where George is actually considerate to his feelings are still not sufficient examples of true friendship. Moreover, implications can be made that suggest George had a rather sinister view of his relationship with Lennie.…

; It has been said that after Homer and Shakespeare, no novel has been written with a completely original story or message, which therefore makes it understandable why we seem to find thousands of novels with friendship as a theme, such as Steinbeck’s famous novella, Of Mice and Men. A good novel makes us question something about our lives, and Steinbeck’s creation is no different. This novel begs, in a metaphoric sense of course, for readers to define friendship and look to see what we value in friends. However, when this is done, a startling question may arise; are George and Lennie, the novels protagonists, even friends themselves? Although unfortunate, it seems that they are not.…

This shows that Lennie is aware he has done something wrong. Moments before George showed up to the bush, Lennie was talking to himself through his Aunt Clara and a rabbit. This part of the novel is significant because it shows that Lennie realizes too late, after the “crime” is committed, that he has done a bad thing. The point of this portion of the book was to show how even though Lennie figured out he had done something wrong, he still does not understand how to prevent something wrong from happening in the…
