Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a novel written by Harriet Beecher Stowe generated friction between the North and the South, and it helped initiate the civil war. Harriet Beecher Stowe throughout her novel wanted to portray the evils of slavery so a large part of the American society could relate to the issue, and being able to do just as she had hoped the novel changed the opinions of numerous Northerners towards slavery (Ushistory.org).“So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war!" (Abraham Lincoln). Lincoln uttered these words when Harriet was invited into the White House to meet with him, proving that the book’s involvement was crucial to the start of the war. Uncle Tom’s Cabin had a major impact upon the people and because of its popularity it became one of the most renowned novels of its time. “The reaction was incredible. Uncle Tom's Cabin sold 300,000 copies in the North alone. The Fugitive Slave Law, passed in 1850, could hardly be enforced by any of Stowe's readers. Although banned in most of the south, it served as another log on the growing fire.”(Ushistory.org). This book also gave the North and South very different opinions about slavery and it raised many northerners that wanted to immediately abolish slavery, something that the South has clinged on since before the Antebellum Era. This immediate change in the North’s opinion because of this novel. Many northerners that once were neutral about slavery wished to see it be abolished after reading the book. The North wished to get rid of the many years of the South’s lifestyle and culture spontaneously, so a rebuttal was bound to happen, and thus the Civil War was
