In 1956, my mother received a phone call from the Marine Base to announce that my father had been in an accident and broke his leg. He was taken to a hospital in Rotterdam where he as admitted and would be staying for a few days. Mother immediately called Mr. Smits to ask for advice, within a few hours, he appeared at our front door with Oma and as he escorted my mother to his car, he told her not to worry, that Oma would stay with Ellen and I while they went to the hospital.
