Uncle Dave Macon Career In 1920, at the age of fifty, Uncle Dave chose to close the Macon Midway Mule and Wagon Transportation Company because motorized vehicles made wagons obsolete (Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy 12-14). The next year, Uncle Dave played for a fundraiser in Morrison, which not only reached its goal, but had sufficient funds to also result in him being paid (A Photo Tribute 11), helping to confirm his hopes to make a living with his music. “For the next two years, Dave Macon played for hire at many different venues in Middle Tennessee, southern Kentucky, and northern Alabama. It was during this period that he adopted the stage name ‘Uncle Dave Macon’”, says Doubler (A Photo Tribute 11). Uncle Dave recognized the young fiddler’s talent, and after discovering that he could also play guitar, Uncle Dave quickly offered Sid a job as his musical partner and driver, which he accepted. A Loew’s Theater manager, E.V. Vinson, was there during the jam session, and he was amazed with Uncle Dave and Sid, soon hiring them to play at Loew’s Theater in Nashville for three weeks.
