Uncg Silent Sky Analysis

I attended UNCG’s production of Silent Sky on Saturday, March 17th. The show was performed in the Brown/Sprinkle Theatre, a thrust stage, that caught all sound from the actors. Each actor was easily heard and spoke with vocal energy. Before seeing the show, I had only read a few scenes from the play and only vaguely knew the plot. It was nice to see this story unfold from actors that worked in the moment and believed their imaginary circumstances. The actors did the best they could with the script provided for them. As an audience member, I found it easiest to connect to the relationship between Peter and Henrietta. After seeing the show, and now reading the play, it’s easier to see that the scenes for those two characters were much written

Gene Kelley and Stanley Donen’s Singin’ in the Rain is a classic Hollywood musical about making movies, but takes place during the time when actors were faced with the challenge from going to silent to sound production. My personal favorite scene in the film Singin’ in the Rain, is the sound barrier scene where Rosco becomes frustrated because Lina won’t talk to into the microphone which is hidden in the bush. During this experimentation with an entirely new form of production, people in this industry had to produce a workable system for recording and projecting sound. During this time, cameras were indeed housed in soundproof booths called blimps and microphones were hidden almost in plain view, such as the bush in Lina and Don’s…

In the scene we performed in The Jacksonian (2014) by Beth Henley, my character Susan comes to the Jacksonian motel to pick up her daughter Rosy, who has been visiting her father Perch. Susan small talks with the bartender Fred until Perch shows up, high on morphine, and they speak about the incident that led him to getting his dental license evoked. Susan storms away after it is clear that Perch will never reconcile their relationship or his career. Performing this scene was an interesting experience on various levels. I have never done much acting but getting into the shoes of snobbish and vulnerably powerless Susan was a great way to appreciate the text more.…

The casting of the actors for this play were well suited with the talents of each of the performers. They drew the audience into the action and provided the audience a balance of character development and comedic content. This was reinforced through the play with actors monologs directed toward the audience, revealing a characters internal conflicts. One area that was a bit of a contradiction came with the choice of using Amanda Tavarez and Belinda Boyd in the roles of Gwendolyn and Lady Bracknell. Being that the story line was to take place in the 1890s in England; given the characters were upper class, it would seem improbable that the marriage of John and Gwendolyn would be acceptable.…

Something pulls at my heart when I look into the stars. Something in the great beyond pulls at me, calling me, begging me to claim it as my own. My curiosity was peeked however when I actually entered the stage area. The first thing I noticed was the nicely dressed doorman handing out programs for the show, he offered me one and I gladly took it hoping for some background information on this play which I had never even heard about. As I walked towards the audience seating I could not help but be mesmerized by the scenery that was laid out before us. Coming from a small town with little budget to work with our sets had to always be handmade or bought cheaply, often we would…

A Doll 's House, by Henrik Ibsen, was written during a time when the role of a woman was to be a supporter and helper of her husband. The play generated great controversy due to the fact that it featured a female protagonist seeking individuality. A Doll 's House was one of the first plays to introduce a woman as having her own purposes and goals. The main characters in the play pretend to be someone who others would like them to be, instead of being their true selves. The person that stands out the most as a character where it seems she leads two different lives is, Nora Helmer.…

One performance by a different group that I really enjoyed was a realistic performance of a homeless person sitting in the middle of the stage, with the pedestrians walking behind her. If one of the pedestrians were to talk to or about the homeless person, they would walk forward so they were in front of the homeless person, and the people behind them would pause in a freeze-frame, passing the focus of the performance to the scene in front, then the speaker would deliver their dialogue, then return to the background and the pedestrians would unfreeze and carry…
