Matthew Wydra John McManus History 3441 March 4, 2023 Film Review of Unbroken “Unbroken” is a truly heart touching story of an Italian American athlete named Louis Zamperini and his struggles in the war and his mindset needed to survive the Japanese POW camps. The first scene of the movie throws you into a mission of making a bombing run. Zamperini is the crew’s bombardier and is trying his hardest to target the drop zone. I think the amount of stress the crew and especially Zamperini is under is more than we can imagine. With flak guns shooting them and explosions going off around them, they were most likely scared for their lives. With so much adrenaline from the mission and the new threat of being shot down by the enemy, the crew was probably filled with mixed emotions of hurriedness and frightfulness. With the bomb doors not closing, Zamperini jumps down to close the doors and looking down is probably the one thing he is telling himself. He is facing enemy gunfire at extreme heights, which would make most men shut down. Seeing one of his waist gunners get shot made Zamperini hurry with caution to help his buddy. To help his buddy, Zamperini starts cracking jokes with him to try and get his mind off the pain and shock and patch him up. Another one of the crewmates is injured during the fighting and it is a disturbing scene with his face covered in blood and him repeating Louis’ name. Zamperini then, instead of panicking, hands him some gauze nonchalantly. Seeing the other gunners finish off the remaining enemy gives the crew a break of relief, they might actually be able to head back home and live to fight another day. These feelings of exhaustion and thankfulness fall short with Zamperini being told that the hydraulics are shot and that they have no
