Analysis Of Unbroken By Laura Hillenbrand

Unbroken is a story by Laura Hillenbrand about an extraordinarily brave and courageous man by the name of Louie Zamperini. Throughout the story he endeavors many inhumane hardships and challenges. Louie is in fact, unbroken. He did not give up regardless of how difficult the issue was he was fighting through. There are thousands of people, all over the world, who have incredible survivor stories similar to Louie’s. These stories vary from abuse of any sort to war stories identical to Louie’s. It began when he was a child, at this time he was known as a she. Her and her mother were in a store. She came across a sweater that she really liked, it was velvet and had a rainbow across the front. Her mother denied her the sweater saying her father would not approve. When she questioned her mother, her mother replied with “because it’s gay.” Years passed and middle school came around. She had to change in front of the other girls for P.E. class. She would go into the corner due to the fact that she was uncomfortable with her body. One day, while sitting in the car with her father, she told him that she did not like her body. He replied with “well you can not do anything about it so…” This caused her to tear up. After this experience, she would began to do research. This made her realize that there are not just two genders, gender is a whole spectrum. At this point she realized she wanted to be identified as a male. He started becoming more comfortable with his gender identity now. He began buying masculine clothing to make him feel more himself. One day in specific, was a huge highlight for him. The day he asked his best friend Ashley to refer to him with masculine pronouns. He was extremely nervous as to what her reply would be. To his surprise she was fine with it. Brian started dealing with issues when he was in grade school. kids he went to school with would verbally bully him. Due to the fact that others saw him as ‘weird.’ This inflicted emotional pain on Brian. Brian had a very low self-esteem, he found it hard to believe that he would ever succeed at anything in life. Along with his low self-esteem, he had other controversies happen throughout his life. he battles with having diabetes and in the year of 2013, he lost his wife, Kim.
