Unbroken By Laura Hillenbrand: Character Analysis

In life, we create a fine line between what we truly believe is right and wrong. These two categories that reveal what we should and shouldn’t do are often tested throughout life, and our morals may change throughout our experiences. The morals of Louis Zamperini are tested when he experiences feelings and decisions that no one should ever have to endure. Without even meeting him, he is a very respectful person no matter what someone has done to him. He has morals that were not shaken even by the hardest times in his life, which is part of the reason he is viewed as a hero today. He was respectful towards the stranded crew members even when it seemed like they had no hope. When Mac died, his body was fresh meat available to the two men who were starving for numerous weeks. Many people do not believe in cannibalism without a second thought, but that’s the problem. Morals are set for people without thinking about being in the situation their selves. Zamperini had this conflict when stranded on the raft; to eat Mac’s body to stay alive or to leave his body in peace. Louis didn’t eat the meat that was basically handed to him, no matter if he was going to die from starvation. Even though Mac ate all of the emergency chocolate within the first two days of their crash, Louis only remembered the situation with patching the raft; without Mac giving his final stretch of strength, none of them would have survived. The sharks would’ve torn the raft apart, leaving them all as bait. Louis forgave Mac for eating the only food for the three of them, and knew what he was going through. His morals were set solid on this experience, while some other people would have taken Mac’s body for their own
