'Unbowed, Unbroken': A Thematic Analysis

“Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken” does not depict the first poorly handled rape scene in Game of Thrones’s history. Benioff and Weiss continuously convert canon consensual sex scenes in the books into nonconsensual ones in the show. For instance, in the pilot, Daenerys Targaryen is also raped on her wedding night by her newly wedded, Khal Drogo. Tears streaming down her face, Drogo disrobes Daenerys and as she attempts to cover her chest to preserve her sense of dignity, he removes her hands and pushes her down on her knees (“Winter is Coming”). Conversely, in the first installment of A Song of Ice and Fire, the consummation is far more consensual: [Drogo] stopped then, and drew her down onto his lap. Dany was flushed and breathless, her heart fluttering in her chest. He cupped her face in his huge hands and looked into his eyes. …show more content…
“Yes,” she whispered as she put his finger inside her. (Martin, 108)
Despite the fact that Daenerys is a thirteen year old maiden sold to Drogo, the scene is as consensual as can be. Be that as it may, Benioff and Weiss offer audiences and fans a bastardized version that simultaneously perpetuates marital rape. Nonetheless, they continued to diverge from the canon, sparking outrage left and right, until it reached its peak after the premiere of “Breaker of Chains” in 2014. In the episode, Jaime Lannister rapes his sister, Cersei, on the corpse of their dead son, Joffrey, whilst ignoring her protestations of “No” and “Stop it.” George R.R. Martin portrays the scene differently: “Hurry,” [Cersei] was whispering now, “quickly, quickly, now, do it now, do me now. Jaime Jaime Jaime.” Her hands helped guide him. “Yes,” Cersei said as he thrust, “my brother, sweet brother, yes, like that, yes, I have you, you’re home now, you’re home now, you’re home.” She kissed his ear and stroked his short bristly hair. Jaime lost himself in her flesh. (Martin,

More specifically, death caused by other men. In The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, the thoughts of individual American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War are reflected upon, explicitly on what they did and did not execute during the Vietnam War. Courage, it is an emotion but it is also an act. To some people it is easy for them to have courage while others struggle to bring it forth. Not everyone is constantly courageous but people sometimes have sparks of it that change lives. The amount of people that displayed courage in The Kite Runner is quite astounding. Any normal person would probably have turn tail and run at the idea of half of the events in the story.…

To demonstrate Joffrey’s monstrosity, Benioff and Weiss created the character Ros, a prostitute, whose sole purpose is to be naked and used for sex until she is shot numerous times with a crossbow by Joffrey (“The Climb”). By the same token, the need to cement how truly despicable Joffrey is proves equally unnecessary as with the case of Ramsay; the audience is enlightened from the moment Joffrey orders the execution of Sansa’s father, Edward, in the season one finale (“Fire and Blood”). Finally, rape as a narrative tool is defended because it maintains “historical accuracy.” Benioff and Weiss acknowledge how “horrible” and “unbearable” rape in the show is, claiming it happens “both in war and perhaps worse, it can happen in peace as well” (Hughes). Despite this statement, the “horror of rape” continues to be “clumsily shoved in almost as a shock tactic” (Hughes).…

However, “Defiance” doesn’t quite fit this mold. This seldom-explored story of Jewish rebels is instead a film crafted with visual and emotional conflicts. This theme of conflict runs throughout the film’s; (at times, distracting) dual plot lines.…

The Effects of Impulse and Recklessness Decisions and actions are the pathways that lead to a change in the way of someone's life. The authors of "The Most Dangerous Game," "A Worn Path," and "The Truth About Being a Hero," Richard Connell, Eudora Welty, and Karl Marlantes, demonstrate how certain decisions and actions change one's life through their works. In addition, the following question is answered throughout each of their works: what is at the end of each pathway that those decisions and actions lead to? Considering their passages, specific pathways often lead someone towards a certain state of mind or situation in life - especially due to impluse and recklessness.
