Analysis Of The Maine's Song 'Lost'

The band The Maine, formed in 2007 in Arizona, uses contrasting themes of happiness and sadness throughout their album American Candy, from which the song “(Un)Lost” comes. “(Un)Lost” is a song about finding oneself and recognizing the potential in themselves. From the title alone, it can be inferred that the song will discuss themes of being found and becoming lost, and in the context of the song this translates to finding oneself. The parenthesis around the ‘un’ part of the title signifies the simplicity of becoming lost. It is so easy to lose oneself in the modern world, and while recognizing this, the songwriter hints to the meaning of the song. Additionally, the title can be interpreted to be a proverbial phrase similar to the expression “Is the glass half full or half empty?” If one ignores the ‘un’ all they read is lost, but if they take it the title altogether, they read unlost. Once again, the title has a deeper meaning and forces the listener to create their own meaning from the song.
