Un Chien Andalou is a silent movie that was produced in 1928 by the director, Luis Buñel, along with the help of Salvador Dali. The idea for the movie came from Buñel, after having a dream that he shared with Dali. Buñel said that he saw the moon being sliced in half by a cloud, while Dali responded that he too had a dream in which he had seen a hand crawling with ants. This led to Dali expressing an interest in creating a movie. The continuous collaboration between the two of them went very smoothly, having justified arguments about certain aspects of the film, just like the two of them deciding that their movie would belong to surrealism. …show more content…
Since the 1920’s, originating in Paris, surrealism has been introduced which challenged the original way movies were watched. When creating the movie both artists agreed that, “No idea or image that might lend itself to a rational explanation of any kind would be accepted. We had to open all doors to the irrational and keep only those images that surprised us, without trying to explain why. “ (Buñel, 104) The idea for the movie originated in a dream, explain why the images they saw are considered ‘not real’, or in this case surrealist. Furthermore, the movie was expressing a new way of thinking and depicting images. The text expresses, that it was such an “original and provocative movie that no ordinary production company would touch it.” (Buñel, 104) This indicates, that even at the time of creating the movie, the two artists were convinced that their movie was something different. By taking two separate dreams and combining them in one showing also battles the normal ways that movies are created today. There is also another way of thinking that is needed to follow or understand movies created during this time
