The start of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s (UPMC) history goes back to the late 19th century. In 1893, UPMC Presbyterian was founded and led as UPMC’s hospital. In 1973, with the guidance of Dr. Thomas Detre and Jeffrey A. Romoff, the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Psychiatry were completely restructured. In 1986, the three hospitals- Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Presbyterian-University Hospital, and Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh were part of the University and united and became UPMC. As time progressed, UPMC persistently built relationships with surrounding communities and its specialty hospitals to form a combined health care system to serve the Pittsburgh region.
Currently, UPMC is recognized as a $10 billion dollar integrated world-wide health care system. The nonprofit holds over 60,000 employees and operates more than 20 hospitals. Combining the hospitals, there are over 5,100 licensed beds, 400 clinical locations which comprises of outpatient sites, doctors’ offices, and offices areas.
