Someone who wants to become an ultrasound technician can choose from as many as four routes to get there. The first route, a one-year certification program, is only available to those who have experience working in other healthcare occupations. Someone who does not meet this requirement should earn either an associate of bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography from an approved program. It will take about two years to earn an associate degree and about four years to get a bachelor’s degree. After earning an associates or bachelor’s degree and graduate, one will have to take a national credentialing exam to become a certified diagnostic medical sonographer.
