The competing belief systems that occur around Antonio are the drives behind his confusion and misunderstanding. On one hand he has his mother and her deep rooted beliefs towards God and the Virgin Mary. Then on the other, there is Ultima and his dad who do not seem to fall into this religious box. These competing views towards life seem to have a toll on Antonio and his everyday interactions. The most thought provoking text for me this semester was the chapter on Alcibiades from Plutarch’s Lives. From reading about, and discussing, the life of the ancient Greek war-hero, I was provoked to question what people look for in their leader, and what exactly makes a leader “good”. To spare no sentiment, Alcibiades, by today’s standards, appears to be downright crazy. He frequently was involved in physical altercations in which he would intentional injury others, often times without being provoked. In the book Bless Me, Ultima Antonio encounters many conflicts throughout his journey with Ultima such as evil spirits, brujas(witches), and religious devotion. One of the most significant conflicts was between English and Spanish speaking students at school. Another serious struggle was the clash between the two different lifestyles of the Marez blood and the Luna blood within his family. When Antonio starts school, he soon discovers a major struggle that will be there for most of his life.…
Plutarch writes about the courage of Caesar and Alexander, which is another trait valued by Roman society. In describing Caesar, Plutarch says “his expedition into Britain was the most famous testimony of his courage. For he was the first who brought a navy into the western ocean, or who sailed into the Atlantic with an army to make war” (Lives). Caesar was an Emperor who expanded the Roman Empire and followed the Roman tradition of military conquest. His courageous military feats were different from the relative inactivity of the Roman rulers during Plutarch’s time.…

In the Force Awakens, Leia must deal with her emotions revolving around her son, Ben, who had fallen to the dark side of the force.
