Ulcerative Colitis Have you ever heard about ulcerative colitis? Ulcerative colitis is a disease that causes inflammation and sores, called ulcers, in the lining of the rectum and colon, also known as the large bowel. Treatment for ulcerative depends on the severity of the disease. Each person has ulcerative colitis differently, so each treatment is adjusted for each individual. It is often treated with tablets such as Aminosalicylates, Corticosteriods, Immunomodulaters, Cortisone, Steroids, Prenisone, Immune System Suppressors, Anti-Inflammatory drugs and other drugs may be given to relax the patient or to relieve pain diarrhea or infection. Although, some symptoms will be severe enough to require hospitalization, an example, diarrhea and excessive bleeding can cause dehydration. Patients will be assigned a special diet, feeding through the vein, medications or sometimes surgery. Medical treatment is usually sufficient. Another way of helping is being careful about what patients eat, this may reduce the symptoms and help heal and recover faster. Patients should eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods from all food groups. It's also important to drink plenty of water to avoid the dehydration. Patients may also need to avoid alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, dairy products. Instead of eating three big meals each day, doctors recommend several smaller meals. This may help prevent cramping. There is no way of preventing this disorder only controlling it and by treating it. The prognosis for ulcerative colitis depends on how severe the first attack is. About 10
