In the book Uglies by Scott Westerfeld, the story is about a world filled with Uglies that transition into Prettys. The main character Tally Youngblood's 16th birthday is coming up and she is scared to have the operation to turn Pretty. Tally's best friend Peris is a few months older than her and has already turned pretty and she misses him. So she decides that she is going to go outside of Uglie Town and go to New Pretty Town to see Peris. On her way back from seeing Peris, she meets Shay, a daredevil that is not scared of anything. Shay and Tally get really close when Shay tells Tally about the smoke where Shay s friend David lives. Shay then reveals that she is going to run away to The Smoke a few days before they turn 16 and go under the operation. Tally thinks it is a bad idea and stays back in uglie town so she can turn pretty. When Tally's 16th birthday comes up, she is stopped by Dr.Cable. She tells Tally if she doesn t reveal where Shay went, she can t turn pretty. Tally favors her loyalty to Perisand, decides to help Dr. Cable find Shay. After a long journey, Tally finds the Smoke. She then grows very close to David. He has her meet his parents and they share more information about the operation and the lesions. After returning to the Smoke in the evening, the next day Tally woke up late and finds that the Smoke is under attack, Dr. Cable found them. Tally barely escaped and found David. When she awoke, the world was on fire. What Scott is symbolizing is that when Tally woke up she felt as if the world was falling apart all around her. This is meaningful because it shows that maybe Tally's journey to the smoke has come to an end or her lie has possibly been exposed. This represents the story because it is a turning point of the story because after Tally throws her pendent in the fire she is awoken the next day by special circumstances attaching the
