Manipulation of citizens by the government is corrupting civilizations as a whole. In the book Uglies the government brainwashes the citizens into thinking that being pretty is better than being ugly, the government has also physically and mentally enhanced their agents to be improved in every situation to control all civilizations. During the story Tally thinks that “99% of humanity has had something done to their brain and only a select few know exactly what” (273). This quote states that the government has some sort of control of everyone, Not only that, anyone who works as an agent knows about this.

When Tally was trying to escape by saying that she left the locket on top of a roof full of hoverboards so when she was trying to get on a hoverboard she slipped and was about to fall an agent was fast enough to catch from falling, by this statement within the book it means that the agents are enhanced to be stronger, faster and mentally improved is just another way to control everyone. Another sentence in the story that states this point is what Tally thinks that “They were superhumanly fast and strong. The special operation had given them more then just terrible faces” (278). This quote basically says that the agents had enhancements to them. When David and Tally were returning the ruins of the smoke they have found The Boss his face was mangled by an agent for trying to escape proving the point that the agents are superior and enhanced in strength.
